Tinner Hill Historic Park, in Falls Church, is an absolute MUST SEE! Actually, it’s more than a must see. It’s an opportunity for historic education.
Tinner Hill Community was founded in the late 1880s by Joesph Tinner and his wife, Elizabeth Tinner. They owned a dozen acres of land and made it possible for their family and others, to become landowners as well as to help them pursue the freedom and equality they were promised at the end of the civil war. Records reveal that community members were educated, employed in a variety of professions and trades as well as being politically and socially active.
Despite all of that, Tinner Hill was still forced to divide in 1887, separating families between Falls Church and Fairfax County. However, in 1915, “Color Citizens Protective League” was formed and they were able to file a lawsuit claiming the law that separated them was unconstitutional. The “Colored Citizens Protective League” eventually became the first rural chapter of the NAACP, making Tinner Hill a key historic park with incredible history.
